LM warmup, 6 miles in 47:52, 7:58/mi, 1 mi cooldown walk w/ dogs, & stretching.

Overcast with some rain (68F).  Just an easy run.  Lower left/inside hamstring, almost behind the knee has been bugging me the last couple of day, so attacked it with the roller today.  If it's as bad/worse tomorrow, I may just run a few miles recovery before the race saturday.  Would hate not to get to the start line.  Boy, don't I sound grown-up.

Does the NW Trek run take place inside their grounds? That would be pretty incredible.

Yes and no. The 5K is completely on the grounds if you include the access road to the park. The last portion runs thru the exhibit area which is more like the traditional zoo. You don't get to run thru the paved loop that goes thru the free roaming areas. The 8K actually goes out on a nearby road bordering the park for a bit before it rejoins the 5K course just to get the extra distance.

Of course, they've made course changes this year, so I'm not sure what that means. One of my big gripes was that the 8K and 5K started at the same time, but when us 8K runners rejoined the 5K course, we would inevitably be behind some of the 5K walkers who liked to walk 5-6 abreast, so I spent the last half of the run hollering (and scaring the bejeezus) out of them from behind trying to get thru. It got worse on the loop running through the exhibit area since that trail is narrower and has many twists and turns.....not exactly conducive to racing. This year they're evidently moving the 5K walkers to a different route or something, so maybe it'll be better....I'm still deciding which race to run, 5K or 8K.

The nice benefit (I hope they still do it) is that you get a free park pass for the day with your race entry, so the wife and I can take the tram to go see the rut after the running (and recovering!) is over. Great race with much sentimental value to me since it was my first race ever. Had to miss last year due to a wedding but am glad to have the chance to run it again.

I guess it's good that you won't be running with the bison...

We love NW Trek. But seeing the sign on the tree that showed the height from which a cougar could drop down onto prey made me even more of a chicken about trail running around here.
